Blog 10: Justifying my Many Hours on Animal Crossing
Video games often get a bad rap as just a way to pass the time, but they’re much more than that. Beyond entertainment, games offer a unique combination of storytelling, problem-solving, and interactivity that other media can’t quite match. Whether it’s exploring vast open worlds, mastering a complex strategy game, or experiencing an emotional narrative, video games engage our minds and imaginations in ways that are both fun and meaningful.
One of the most overlooked benefits of gaming is how it fosters skills and learning. Many games require critical thinking, collaboration, and quick decision-making, which can translate into real-world abilities. Multiplayer and cooperative games encourage teamwork and communication, while puzzle or strategy games sharpen analytical thinking. Even games with deep narratives can spark empathy and understanding, allowing players to step into perspectives and lives different from their own. In short, video games aren’t just about entertainment, they’re also about growth.
Finally, video games are a powerful way to connect people. Communities form around shared experiences, whether through streaming, competitions, or online forums. Games bring together people from different backgrounds, countries, and age groups, creating connections that wouldn’t exist otherwise. In a world that’s increasingly digital, video games provide both a sense of play and a sense of community, reminding us of that learning, creativity, and social interaction can all happen in a virtual space.
