Blog 5: Absolute Mayhem
In the Allstate Mayhem ad, “Baseball Dad,” Mayhem plays the part of a distracted dad trying to back out of a driveway after a chaotic little league game. Naturally, things go wrong fast. He nearly crashes, tears up a lawn, and reminds us how quickly a normal day can turn into a mess. It’s over-the-top, but also painfully familiar. That’s the relatability of these ads; take everyday moments and show how unpredictable they can be.
What’s smart is how the ad uses humor and relatable chaos to make a point. We all know the overwhelmed parent trope, and this taps right into it. It’s funny, but also a reminder that accidents don’t always happen during big moments. They happen in your own driveway. That “it could happen to you” vibe is strong here, as well as the plethora of other mayhem commercials. A strong point each and every one portrays humorously.
And that’s where Allstate steps in, not with a hard sell, but with a wink almost. Mayhem causes the mess, and Allstate is there to clean it up. It’s entertaining, a little stressful, and very effective at making you think about your own coverage without feeling like a lecture.
